Today it will not rain. Because I said so. Grain ripens east of the mountains. Thick grass bows down to the combine. A red-tail bows down to hunger, its moist eye, tearless, blinks as it strikes its prey. Plain gray clouds open and close but in the afternoon they will grow thin on the edges of sky. I have no doubt it will rain tomorrow.
The eclipse of stars presages total darkness and the first prick of rain plucks at a dusty corner of the garden. Rust resumes its slow transformation of shovel and rake. Somewhere the combine is sleeping, cool to the touch now. Somewhere a red-tail sails home over the warm wet wheat.
