i’m getting mean,
and i don’t like it, but i just can’t take all the bad poetry i’m seeing.
i know i should stop looking, because there’s nothing good out there…
nothing with heart and guts and soul, but i keep on looking.
and i get the letters…
“my son’s a writer. he’s had some things published in 2 online magazines and he intends to be a poet.
he’s written sonnets and has the most absolutely lovely rhymes.
i feel so good and special and sweet when i read his things.
i even told him he should send some of his poems to hallmark, they’re that good.
i’m just writing to you because i heard you’re a poet also.
even though i i never read any of your poems i just had to tell you that he wants to be a poet in the worst way and i’m writing to you to hear what you had to say.”
dear ma’am, it’s too late… i received your letter this morning concerning your son wanting to be a poet in the worst way…
i’m afraid he already is.

john, I have read this a few times in other forums, I really shouldn't quote in the resident poet's area but these lines always make me laugh (or cry maybe):
i even told him he should send some of his poems to hallmark, they’re that good.
... and we wonder why a poet turns to JD for relief ... ah well, I guess christmas cards will never have Bukowksi scratched in the credits at the bottom, small loss though as nobody reads them anyway ... great read as always.
