GMT + 3 Europe Bulgaria Sofia-Grad 42 40 00 N 023 18 00 E . SOFIA . Nod for no. Shake for yes. I was not convinced that you were not aware that I didn’t know you were not taking the piss. . As the train snaked through mountainous terrain, each crossing a step back in time was displayed. The Ladas and flashing lights are passed as the train chugs along and the clock continues to wind back. Next junction no lights but a manually operated crane, Holding vigil, this sentinel, to keep the bicycles at bay. Further along the Barely Balkan-Conrad Express and the tracks are barred with rope, maybe hemp, as a farmer waits with a gnarled branch staff to pasture his pied piper goats. . Black market Lev delivered right to the train carriage window. The luxury of stotinki placed right in my palms as the streeties come onboard from the hallway behind me and make off with my last banana and water bottle until Istanbul, where the trees have not leaf, but frond. . Sleeping in doorways, curtained iron to keep the huffing on the street, your daily vestibule your daily purgatory, your daily shed. Take the Sofia banana, though my belly is not yet full, little man. On the end of this line lie döners and Pudding Shops; ATM s and such things. . If I were asleep you’d commandeer my fingerings, so take what you can, so that you may pageant your urchin skill to your grubby urchin friends. Godspeed my pre-teen chimney sweep, my stolid polisher of shoes. Keep on it. You’ve earned a treat. Surely something better must come soon. Or not - after my initial sympathetic condolence it’s out of my hands. . It’s none of my concern.
